Heartburn in pregnancy
Heartburn in pregnancy. It’s no joke!
That burning, acidic sensation that keeps you up at night and makes dinner choices less than enjoyable. You have my full sympathy!
I’m curious, what home remedies for heartburn have you tried? Let me know in the comments below. It might help someone else who is pregnant and suffering.
One of my Hypnobirthing clients changed the world for the rest of their group class when they announced that Love Heart sweets had been a gamechanger when it came to easing their heartburn!
So much so, the next week she disappeared off the Zoom screen and came back with a huge Amazon delivery of the stuff.
Have you tried it yourself?
One day I’d love to have my own Love Heart sweets with pregnancy motivation quotes to help get you through the night!
5 places to visit on maternity leave - local businesses in Glasgow Southside
This idea is entirely inspired by my friend Jen. I was on the final stretch of my pregnancy, a few weeks into my maternity leave, a week past my due date (total myth btw - one I tackle in my Hypnobirthing course!) and starting to go a bit stir crazy.
So, like the awesome pal she is, she started to send me daily messages with local gems to visit, to keep me busy. Somewhere local, cute and just for pre-baby me. So here are my top picks of local Glasgow Southside businesses to wile away the hours and enjoy on your maternity leave.
1. Café Strange Brew – 1082 Pollokshaws Rd
A firm Glasgow Southside staple. Quirky, friendly and bloomin’ delicious. You might even spot a celeb. Get the Turkish eggs – you won’t regret it.
2. Aume – 707 Pollokshaws Rd
This homeware boutique is my spirit animal. Gorgeous trinkets that would make the perfect baby shower gift for you, your pregnant pal or push present! 😉
3. Glasgow Plany Mama – 617 Pollokshaws Rd
Filling your home with gorgeous greenery is a great way to create the safe and relaxing calm space that we talk about during Hypnobirthing classes. As if you needed an excuse? This shop is a must for house plant lovers like myself!
4. Grain & Grind - 50 Battlefield Rd
Ok, so the multiple caffeine hits might need to wait until your baby is actually here but that shouldn’t stop you and bump grabbing a delicious treat and some Grade A people watching.
5. Paper Plane – 12 Skirving St
The loveliest little shop, crammed full of gorgeousness. I always find some really unique gifts hiding in here. Treat yourself! Side note – the sisters who own this store are just wonderful.
Hitting up some of your favourite spots that fill you with happiness is a great way to get the oxytocin flowing (the hormone you need to get labour started and keep it going). Plus, you deserve some me time.
I ❤️ Glasgow.
I’m pregnant. What now?
I’m about 5 weeks pregnant in this photo. I’d just found out the night before. My first reaction was excitement. Followed by fear. Then guilt. This pregnancy was so, so wanted so why didn’t I only feel pure elation? What did it mean? Did this make me a bad mum already?
When I look at this photo now I feel a bit sad. Nobody else would notice but what I see is a forced smile, tight shoulders and a million worries.
I feel a bit nervous sharing this but I think it’s so important that we talk about it. Because I know I’m not alone. Because it’s totally normal. You’re human, your hormones are doing all sorts of crazy and wonderful things and let’s not forget, your whole world is about to change.
I decided to take some control. That I wanted to give myself permission to actually enjoy this pregnancy. That I wanted to start motherhood off in the best possible headspace.
So that’s what I did. I took a Hypnobirthing class and I’ve never looked backed. It changed everything for me. It made me see that I truly could do anything I put my mind to. That it was ok to feel however I did in that moment. That looking after myself was important - not just for me but for my baby.
Now I have the wonderful job of helping others feel the same. To help them move past their fears and actually enjoy their pregnancy. I totally love it (have I mentioned that? 😂).

What the F is Hypnobirthing?
Thanks to whoever searched this and clicked on my Google Ad. It gave me a right good chuckle. 😂 I actually get asked this all the time - even still by my mum sometimes 🙈 (although without the F, just in case you’re reading Mum 😉).
Essentially Hypnobirthing classes are the thing that’s going to take you...
FROM BRICKING IT to BOSSING IT 💪🏻
⭐️ We’ll work through your worries about giving birth
⭐️ Help you to let go of your fears
⭐️ Give you the facts you need to trust your body to do its thing
⭐️ Flip how you think about birth so that you can actually enjoy your pregnancy
⭐️ And set you up with the tips and tricks that’ll help you have the best birth experience possible
It’s as simple as that really. Not nearly as complicated as the crap name suggests. 😉
⭐️ If you’d like a free top tips sheet to give you a bit of a taster of what’s involved, just drop me a message.
I’m a big believer that Hypnobirthing can “work” (or as I like to say, make a BIG difference), for any type of birth - induction, “natural”, C-section, home, hospital, you name it. I wouldn’t teach it otherwise. There are no right or wrong ways here, and certainly no judgements.
I’ve got just a couple of slots left over the summer, so you still have time to book!
p.s. This pic was taken after I’d just finished my Hypnobirthing teacher training. Still no idea what made me make this face but I think it was probably nappy related 😂
3 websites to help you get birth savvy
Let’s face it. There’s a lot of crap out there on the internet. Everyone has an opinion (and don’t we all know it) but sometimes they present those opinions as facts. Here are three tried and tested places that are a fantastic place to start when it comes to getting the info you need on birth.
www.evidencebasedbirth.com - the clue is in the name! Their mission is to raise the quality of childbirth care globally, by putting accurate, evidence based research into the hands of families and communities, so they can make informed, empowered choices. They also do some brilliant fact sheets that clearly and simply explain the pros and cons of common birth related issues and decisions. If you’ve caught the birth info bug, this is a great place to start.
www.aims.org.uk - they campaign for improvements to the UK's maternity services, as well as supporting women and families directly through their helpline, and sharing information to pregnant people and health carers with informative books, Journal and website resources. A really wonderful resource, especially if you have questions about the care you’re receiving.
Positive Birth Glasgow Facebook Group - now I’m definitely not claiming everything on here is fact, after all it’s still Facebook! But there are loads of Glasgow based birth professionals who are constantly sharing helpful info in here, as well as being a community for pregnant people to make connections and share tips and questions. Oh and you might even be able to pick up a freebie - there’s always something up for grabs on there!
At all of my Hypnobirthing Glasgow and online classes we’ll explore all sorts of resources and helpful places that you might find useful during your pregnancy - these 3 are my top places to start!
My favourite podcasts for bump & pram walks
I spent a lot of time walking on maternity leave… and I mean a lot! Long and gentle strolls around Glasgow to help my baby “drop down” when I was pregnant and hopefully (oh please, please, please) kick start labour. I found this time so helpful to help me mentally prepare for birth.
Then it was long walks with the pram when my baby arrived. I loved this bit.
It can feel a bit lonely sometimes though and one thing that I found really helped was sticking on a podcast, popping in my headphones and just getting lost in someone else’s chatter.
So here are my top podcasts - some birth and baby related, some not - that I hope you’ll enjoy too.
Happy Mum, Happy Baby - Giovanna Fletcher
Firstly, Giovanna’s voice is just divine and could instantly put the most stressed out parent at ease. She also manages to bag some pretty great guests who open up their hearts, sharing their birth and parent stories. Prepare yourself though - some might leave you reaching for the hankies!
Sh**ged, Married, Annoyed - Chris & Rosie Ramsey
Bloody hilarious, completely crude and sometimes utterly ridiculous. I’ve literally lost days of my life listening to this pair talk total nonsense but it’s so worth it. Always my go to when I need a bit of a laugh and a pick me up.
Made by Mammas: the Podcast - Zoe Hardman & Georgia Dayton
Real chat about all things motherhood. A great balance of funny, moving and helpful. They end each podcast with a review of their favourite parenting products - I’ve found some real gems through this!
How did we get here? - Professor Tanya Byron & Claudia Winkleman
Real-life parents and family members share their stories in a completely unscripted session. It’s amazing to hear them work through their stories and begin to find solutions to move forward. Definitely not one to listen to if you’re having a tough day but super interesting.
Desert Island Discs - BBC Radio 4
An oldie but a total classic. I love to go back and listen to old recordings with Kirsty Young (she’s currently on hiatus). Her voice is completely soothing yet she also manages to get her guests to open up about some pretty intense topics. My go to, fail-safe - never disappoints.
You could of course listen to your BORN READY BABY. Hypnobirthing tracks too. ;) Oh and remember to switch to something else if any difficult or dramatic birth stories start to creep in and you’re pregnant. Positive birth stories only! You can always go back to it once you’ve had your baby.
So there you have it. Hopefully that keeps you going for a while. There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a podcast to make you feel part of a great conversation… without the effort of having to actually get involved!
What is a doula anyway?
Isn’t a doula just something new the middle-class have fabricated to justify throwing more cash down the baby rabbit hole? Or just for bare-foot hippies who have their heart set on giving birth in a field? Or something you can just ask your Aunt Margery to do?
Nope, nope and nope (well you could ask Aunt Margery, but are you totally sure she’s not going to flake? No offence Aunt Margery…).
Give the word ‘doula’ a quick Google and you’ll see that it actually means a person who is trained to provide support to pregnant people and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and the period of time following birth (Collins English Dictionary, 2020), and that the concept was actually around well before the invention of the baby shower and over-priced gadgets.
So what does a doula actually do? In short, whatever you need them to do. Your doula will be there to act as your cheerleader, your advocate, your confidante and support. They’re there to provide you with emotional and physical support and to be your (sometimes only) continuity of care - that’s when you see and work with the same professional throughout your pregnancy. Giving birth can be one of the most vulnerable experiences you’ll ever have (in a wonderful way!), so having someone right there by your side who you trust can make a huge difference to how you feel about your experience.
Isn’t that what your birth partner is there to do? Yes, you’re absolutely right but there are a couple of things to consider here. To start with, some don’t have a partner to ask, who they can rely on or who is available. For those who do have their partner by their side, hiring a doula frees them up to fully focus on their joint experience, leaving their doula to take care of all of their other emotion, mental and physical (non-medical) needs.
Now this is the really important part. A doula is there to support your pregnancy, birth and postnatal choices. It’s their job to support you to have the experience that you want and to advocate for the things that are important to you. No matter what those choices are. They’re definitely not there to encourage you to make specific choices or to try to create a birth experience for you that is anything other than the one you want. Your doula is 100% on your team.
Doesn’t that all sound just peachy? I know, I know, that’s all well and good but show me some hard facts.
It’s time to let the stats do the talking. Hiring a doula can mean a…
39% decrease in the risk of Caesarean
15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with your birth experience (Evidence Based Birth, 2019)
It’s pretty logical really - the more relaxed and safe you feel, the better your chances of having an efficient and comfortable birth experience (I talk about this loads with my Hypnobirthing clients). Having continuous support right there by your side can be one of the most powerful ways of helping you to let go and allow your body do its thing and birth your baby.
Hormones 101
It’s all about those hormones baby! When we’re talking about birth and Hypnobirthing, there are two main hormones that it’s essential you know about.
The first is our friend, and that’s awesome Oxytocin. This is the feel good hormone, you know, the one that’s making us feel all gooey when we fall in love. It just so happens that this is the hormone that the muscles of your uterus need to be able to contract, and birth your baby. Who’d have known?! Together with prostaglandins (the one that helps your cervix to dilate) these two hormones work in a sort of positive feedback loop, one helping the creation of the other.
Then there’s the hormone that’s definitely not on the Christmas card list – Oxytocin’s enemy, Adrenaline. We want to keep our adrenaline levels super low in labour, otherwise it starts to interrupt the production of oxytocin (you know, the one we need for things to work), our breathing starts to quicken and become more
shallow, preventing us from keeping our muscles nice and oxygenated. Oh and it also makes us tense up and clamp our muscles – not so conducive to getting a baby out.
Try to think of it like this. When we go into birth feeling afraid, we’ll naturally become tense when it begins to happen, and when we feel tense we experience more pain. The same way that you brace yourself before an impact. We focus all of our attention on that area, tense up our muscles, and therefore increase the levels
of pain we feel. Which makes us feel more afraid = more tense = more pain. You get the picture. This is what we call the fear, tension, pain cycle, and ideally we want to do everything we can to interrupt it.
During your Hypnobirthing class (online or in person in Glasgow), we’ll work on removing your fear and interrupting that cycle before it ever gets a chance to get going.
See? Pregnancy hormones aren’t just sent to drive us crazy, they have a job to do too!
5 Things You Don’t Know About Birth
It doesn’t need to be painful. Well not the full time at least! Did you know that the hormone that fuels your contractions is commonly known as the “feel good” hormone? That’s right - it’s the hormone Oxytocin that will help to get your baby here, which means it’s not designed to feel bad.
You’re the one in control! You have full autonomy over your own body, that means you get to call the shots!
Labour isn’t one long contraction. One of the most under-rated, secret things about labour is that in between contractions, your body should feel pretty normal. Plenty of time to catch your breath and prepare yourself for the next one.
Your environment is super important. Your body is craving a feeling of comfort and familiarity, so that it knows you’re safe to have your baby here. It does this by using your senses to build up a picture of how you feel in that environment. There are lots of easy ways you can help make that happen… but that’s another post!
Your body actually needs you to stay calm. If you’re feeling freaked out then your mind gets a message that says “I don’t feel safe here, I want this to stop”, which then in turns throws off your all important birth hormones and things can start to seriously slow down and become more uncomfortable. Hypnobirthing is one of the best ways to learn effective tools and techniques for keeping yourself calm during labour.
Am I in labour?
In the last few weeks of your pregnancy it can be sooooo easy to take every twinge as a sign that you’re going to have your baby that night!
And you might... but it also might not be quite time yet.
You grab your bag, get all excited and then... nothing! The twinges disappear.
The “false alarms” (btw, there’s no such thing) can feel a bit disappointing so here are my top tips I share with the people I work with:
Keep yourself nicely distracted - obsessing will only slow things down so try your best to be patient
Get your oxytocin flowing!
Relax - let go of tension and conserve your energy
Listen to your body - you’ll know when it’s time!
Whether it’s tonight or in a few days time - you’re going to meet your baby soon!
What’s a Hypnotherapy Session Actually Like?
Thought about Hypnotherapy but worried you might end up involuntarily spilling all of your secrets and clucking like a chicken?
I’m here to tell you that a Hypnotherapy session will be nothing like that (at least not with me!).
I can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do (and I wouldn’t want to!), you’ll still be aware of what’s happening around you and you’re still the one who is in control.
Chances are though, you’ll be so relaxed that you won’t even care!
Something I hear a lot is “but I’m just terrible at switching off”. Take the pressure off - you’re not going to “fail” at Hypnotherapy. For some people they can get into that deeply relaxed state in an instant, for others it takes a bit of practise - and that’s ok!
You’ll probably find that you’re a whole lot better at relaxing than you ever thought, you just need a helping hand to get there... and then the real work can happen!
Got a question about how it works? Just send me a message and I’ll chat you through it.
Can Hypnobirthing Change Your Life?
In short… yes! Well, at least it has for me and my clients. Here’s how:
Going into parenthood in the most positive place will help immensely. Becoming a parent is amazing, but it can also be overwhelming. If you’re able to head into the experience without carrying a whole bunch of birth baggage, you’ll be free to focus on what you really want to - your baby!
Hypnobirthing will help you to realise just how capable you are and help you to find a strength you didn’t even know was there, however your birth happens! I always tell me clients to hold on to that feeling of pride and strength after their birth, because it really does make you feel like you can achieve anything.
The skills you’ll learn with Hypnobirthing during pregnancy will help you in all areas of your life! Being able to control your thoughts, slow down your mind and keep a sense of perspective is something that truly has changed my life. Not to mention the new confidence and belief in yourself that comes from taking control of your birth and doing something so powerful.
I run popular Hypnobirthing and birth preparation courses in Glasgow and online. If you’d like some support to go into birth feeling totally ready and in control, you can check my availability using the button below.
Best pregnancy & birth books
Maybe you’re a bit like me and want to know you’ve got all of the details before taking the plunge with your birth prep? I read a full Hypnobirthing book before I’d even signed up to do a Hypnobirthing course. I had to know that I liked it first, you know?
But where do you start? Well I’ve pretty much read them all and done the market research so you don’t have to. Here are my top recommendations:
Hypnobirthing. Practical Ways to Make Your Birth Better, by founder of the Positive Birth Company, Siobhan Miller
Your Baby, Your Birth, Hypnobirthing Skills for Every Birth, by Hollie de Cruz
Expecting Better, Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom is Wrong and What You Really Need to Know, by Emily Oyster
The Birth Partner, a Complete Guide to Childbirth for Dads, Partners, Doulas, and Other Labour Companions, by Penny Simkin
That should keep you busy for a while! Imagine books like the foundation, the starting point, giving you the key points to set the context. A Hypnobirthing course with a Hypnobirthing teacher is really what will help it all to “click” and bring it to life in a way that actually works for you and your needs.
My award winning (have I mentioned that) Hypnobirthing courses run most months in Glasgow and online. I’d love to help you to have a birth that you feel great about and make your Hypnobirthing journey the best it can possibly be!
P.S. I use Amazon affiliate links. As a thank you for introducing you to my favourite products I make pennies on each purchase. There’s no additional cost to you.
When is the best time to start Hypnobirthing?
“When should I start my Hypnobirthing course?” This has to be one of my most asked questions!
Let’s get one thing clear right from the get-go. It’s never too late to start Hypnobirthing. If you’re 39 weeks pregnant and panicking, you will absolutely still get benefit from starting some Hypnobirthing, birth prep and relaxation practise now!
It’s also never too early. If it feels right for you to start early in your pregnancy, even if that just means reading a Hypnobirthing book in your first trimester, then that’s what to do!
My best advice is that any time between 20-30 weeks and in your second trimester is the ideal time to start. That way your birth is close enough that it actually feels like a reality, but you still have lots of time to practise (an important part of Hypnobirthing!). The sooner you start, the more time you have to work on all of your wonderful birth and pregnancy relaxation techniques.
If you ever want to chat it over, you can contact me through the “Contact” tab, and I’ll happily answer your questions.
From one emotional woman to another…
This week I had my very first BRB Club meet up, and let me tell you, it's left me a bit emotional.
I set up this club as a bonus extra for anyone who asks for my support with their birth prep. Why? Because over the past 2 and a half years that I've been getting people ready for birth, there was one thing my clients kept coming back to tell me.
They missed Hypnobirthing. They really missed Hypnobirthing. Heck, the word I kept hearing over and over again was that they “mourned” Hypnobirthing.
Their Hypnobirthing sessions and practice at home had become something that they looked forward to, something that brought them comfort and something that gave them permission and time to focus on their own well-being.
So, that's exactly why I've added a bonus 6 month membership to the BRB Club to every package. I want to make sure that from here on in, nobody has a chance to miss their Hypnobirthing because they have a monthly reminder and helping hand to keep their well-being front of mind, even with a new baby!
Why was I emotional? A few reasons:
It was a chance to see the lovely faces who were part of my last in person group Hypnobirthing course, some of whom are about to meet their babies any day now! It was great to see them looking excited for what's to come and to have a chance to ease any last minute jitters.
Seeing the connections they've made with other parents-to-be completely warms my heart. Having the support of people who are at exactly the same stage and just “get it” is invaluable. I was lucky enough to have that myself, and know I wouldn't have coped so well without it.
After the session a friend text me to ask how it went. I replied “It was a wonderful way to spend an hour”. She replied, “How many people get to say that about their job?”. She's so right. I'm grateful I get to work with so many brilliant women at such a special moment in their lives.
I'd love to hear what you think you'd find helpful from this type of community as you enter into parenthood? Friendship? Advice and support? A safe place to vent about your partner? I'm kidding… kinda ;) Let me know in the comments below or send me a DM.
February 23, 2022Hypnobirthing, pregnancy, parent to be
First trimester feels!
If you’re in your first trimester, congratulations! I bet you’re feeling really happy and excited… but I’m also going to bet you’re feeling some other ways too!
A bit numb? This is so common and just not spoken about enough. I remember feeling like everything had changed but also nothing had changed at the same time. With that shift in hormones, it’s also really common to feel a bit down. Please know, that fog will lift and one day you’ll wake up feeling a lot more excited!
Anything from a bit eugh to can’t leave the bathroom. Nausea is no joke! Morning sickness, what a scam! There’s nothing exclusive to morning about it. HG ladies - you have my whole heart. Sending you comfort and hope. However you’re feeling, that first rush of joy can quite quickly be overshadowed by feeling icky. Bottom line, do what you need to do to get through the day, be kind to yourself and try your best to keep your eye on the prize. This isn’t forever, even if it feels like it right now!
A bit freaked out? Maybe you’ve come to the realisation that this baby actually has to come out of you at some point. Birth was the last thing on your mind when TTC but now it’s all you can think about. Please know, birth can absolutely be a positive and empowering experience for you, whatever form it takes. But maybe give Hypnobirthing a try. ;) I promise, it will transform how you feel about and approach your birth!
Second trimester energy!
You’ve been feeling sluggish for months.
You can’t quite put your finger on it but you’ve definitely got less energy, less get up and go and less sparkle.
Then one day you wake up and all of a sudden you feel a whole lot better. 🙌
When I was in my first trimester I remembering wondering if I’d ever feel like me again. I felt like I’d completely lost my personality.
I found it difficult to make conversation, to focus on anything and to feel excited.
Where to go in Glasgow for new-born & maternity photography
It’s hard to know where to start when it comes to picking the perfect person to take your precious pics.
That’s why I’ve done all the hard work and research for you.
I’ll only ever send you to wonderful, local women who I trust and would visit myself!
Enter Sarah Mahon Photography! Here’s what Sarah has to say,
“I am an award winning portrait photographer specialising in pregnancy, newborns and baby's first year. I'm based in Glasgow, Scotland and I work with new and expectant parents across the city and surrounding areas.
I'm so glad you're considering a portrait session to document an incredibly special time in your life. Whether you want to capture your belly bump in the later stages of your pregnancy, your newborn baby within those first couple of weeks, or meeting those baby milestones as they grow - these are relatively brief moments in time that we don't get back.
The magic of photography is that those memories don't have to fade. You can re-live them again and again, each time being transported back to exactly how you felt there and then. What a gift!
If you are looking for some beautiful prints to display in your home, or an album to treasure these precious memories forever, you have come to just the right place. I will work closely with you to create your dream photographs and design bespoke artwork products for you and your family to enjoy for years to come!”
Do you need a “mum squad”?
Making new friends as an adult. 😬
It’s a weird concept isn’t it. It’s so much harder to open ourselves up to make friends as an adult.
When you’re a kid it’s, “Do you want to play with me?”. Job done.
Can you imagine saying that now? 😂
When I was pregnant, I’ll be honest… I was DESPERATE to make pals with other pregnant folk. All I’d ever heard was that group of people would get you through those first few months.
Cut to me rocking up to the wrong venue for an antenatal class and nearly bursting into tears. This was my last chance to meet my tribe and I’d missed it!
No way, no how! I was not letting this F up ruin my final chance.
I sped across Glasgow and showed up 45 mins late, puffing with breathlessness and cringing inside.
But do you know what? Something magical happened that day.
I met 5 of my now best friends.
We’re all so different but we’ve got a bond like no other.
Can you be disappointed by birth?
I’ve been thinking for a while about how to word this one…
I know one thing that holds people back from “planning” for birth is a buried deep worry that they’ll be disappointed.
They don’t want to allow themselves to think it could be a positive experience in case it doesn’t play out how they hoped.
That it’s better to go in blindly because then you can prove yourself right.
We feel psychologically safe when we can tell ourselves “told you so”.
There’s so much problematic that I can’t possibly unpack it in one post.
What I will say though:
⭐️ Hypnobirthing absolutely doesn’t guarantee you a particular type of birth. If I had that magic wand I’d wave it for every single one of you. What it does mean is that you’ll be on the front foot should your plans change along the way. Far more than just rocking up will!
⭐️ It’s not about “achieving” something. However you bring your baby into the world, and whatever support you accept doing it, you are a complete rockstar. Absolutely no question.
⭐️ There is something so empowering about knowing that you’ve prepared and done all that you could. Then it’s a case of letting go and riding the waves.
⭐️ Having these skills will massively increase your chances of having that experience you hoped for.
⭐️ I believe it’s important to visualise your birth happening in lots of different ways. Disappointment is a totally normal emotion and an understandable one. But if things change along the way, then having the understanding and tools to stay grounded and calm will help to keep more difficult emotions under control.
However you bring your baby into the world, it’s your story. No one can tell you how to feel about it.
Take the pressure of yourself and know that I’m here to support you whatever you choose for your birth and however you feel along the way.
